THOUGHT PATTERNS delves into Verfaille’s internal dialogue about productivity, growth, stagnation. The cycles of thought that shape her creative process expressed in this body of work. A sense of simplicity is created by stripping away the distractions of colour to focus on form, line, and composition. Verfaille has found that patterns emerge, intertwining to form a tapestry of connected thinking.
The artworks reflect her exploration and witnessing of the evolving nature of recurring thoughts, the tension between movement and stillness, and how moments of meditative flow can paradoxically fuel true progress and expression.
“How is productivity linked to my overall well-being? Or my sense of self?
If I am unproductive, what does this mean and how do I feel?
Maybe it links to a ‘lack of progress’ or a ‘lack of moving forward’.
Which in turn links to my feelings of being ‘stuck’. "
Subconsciously I’ve been feeling that if I am unproductive, I am standing still and not progressing forward.
Yet,
Ironically,
It is in the stillness of simply being that I am most productive.
That’s when aha! moments happen. Inspiration evokes.
It is in these meditative moments, I flow.
THAT is progress.
THAT is moving forward.
Simone Verfaille (b. 1995, Cape Town, South Africa) creates through the folds and layers of her life. After earning her BA(Hons) Fine Art from Stellenbosch University in 2018, she had a break from the art world, before returning in 2023 with renewed passion and perspective.
To Simone, art is not merely a product but a process that extends beyond the canvas. It mirrors the way we experience, navigate, and embrace life's ever-evolving nature. She believes that life, in all its facets, is best captured through the intricate layers that compose it.
In her art practice, each layer of paint represents a distinct memory, a fragment of time, or a moment of existence. Her works become a captivating interplay of colours, forms, and textures, where she hopes to capture the folds and layers of her own sense of self, life and expression.
