ALWAYS by Liffey Joy
5 October 2017 - 2 November 2017
ALWAYS features a series of monochromatic works that, each in their own way, focus on the fragility of life.
By using organic processes and centering on natural subject matter these works highlight the universal condition of vulnerability by showing how, when all is said and done, we are all just products of the earth.
Light and dark are important elements; both in terms of colour but also in relation to density of material. This interplay between heavier areas of material contrasting against quieter spaces aims to reflect the highs and lows of human emotion.
These pieces have been created as a form of therapy to help in dealing with the grief and loss of losing a loved one unexpectedly. Because of this salt features heavily in a variety of forms as a symbol of healing.
More than anything this show is about hope, love and, even in the darkest of time, honouring the memory of a treasured soul.
Liffey Joy was born in the UK in 1990 and received her BA in Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2011. She is a mixed media artist whose work focuses on materiality. She places emphasis on the importance of materials and veers towards using those with unpredictable characteristics; attempting to harness their volatile natures. Growth and decay feature in the way she uses these media and this echoes the changing nature of the substances used to show these opposing forces. The concept of ‘the multiple’ is a reoccurring subject and the meditative process of their creation links to the common concepts of fragility, temporality and healing that underlie her practice.
